The drive time slot at a radio station is the most sought-after, right after the breakfast slot. That’s why the 5FM drive time crew is thrilled to be switching from their midday slot to the drive time.
Broadcaster Zanele Potelwa commented, “There are so many highlights to share from Lunch, but the most important ones are the friendships we’ve grown and the family we’ve built with our SA listeners. We won Best Daytime Show, Best News Reader, and Best Content Producer.”
With the same group that hosted the noon show, Potelwa now hosts 5 Drive. The crew consists of sports presenters Jude van Wyk and Nick Archibald who handle traffic, reporter Yanga Mjoli, and content producers ShabZi Madallion and Masego Tlhakanye.
Former YFM personality Lula Odiba was one of the latest additions to the station when it introduced its redesigned lineup in June.
The late great broadcaster Eddie Zondi’s daughter, Lula Odiba, will now host the 12 to 15 hour time slot.
“It all comes down to genuinely relating to and inspiring young people. Additionally, it offers us the chance to think outside the box and develop cutting-edge solutions our clients have never seen before.
This makes 5FM the best place for companies to engage with the next generation of leaders in the industry, according to a statement from Masixole Mdingane, the PCS Combo Business Manager for 5FM and Good Hope FM.
Transitioning from a student radio station to a commercial one
Potelwa reflected on her experience attending Tuks FM.
“From listening to my audio at Tuks FM years ago and dreamed of conducting a daytime show on a commercial radio station one day, to really being able to take on this great honour (How loyal is God?) Oh my word! The host posted on Instagram, “I hope you’ll come along for the ride with us my loves. It’s about to be a beautiful journey.”
ShabZi Madallion, a show producer whose real name is Leshabe Rampedi, thought back on his time slot-shifting experience on the network.
When I think back on my path, everything seems to be going full circle. In order to break through and establish myself in the radio industry, I approached my first job at 5FM with a humble attitude and was willing to take on any duty, Madallion wrote.
A turning point in my career was accepting the role of official producer for 5 Lunch with Zanele and Yanga. It was a thrill to build that show with such an amazing crew, and now we’re all going to drive time together.
An additional producer of the recently launched drive-time programme Tlhakanye rejoiced at receiving a nomination for the Entertainment Radio Producer of the Year category at the 2019 Basadi Awards.
