Molemo Katlego Maarohanye, better known as Jub Jub, is a rapper and television personality. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has dropped all allegations against her.
The NPA said in a statement on Thursday that it had made this decision after carefully reviewing the police case docket, the prosecutor’s report and recommendations, as well as information obtained from representations the defence made to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The DPP’s office came to the conclusion that there are no realistic chances of a successful prosecution, according to NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane.
“Therefore, it made sense to drop the accusations of assault, attempted murder, and rape against Maarohanye,” Mjonondwane stated.
Maarohanye was charged on 13 counts, which included assault, attempted murder, and rape against actress Amanda du Pont, his former lover, and other women. The alleged incidents happened between 2006 and 2009. In February 2022, Du-Pont accused Maarohanye of rape.
Following their social media statements, three more women came forward with identical accusations. Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, Maarohanye turned himself in to the police and went before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted freedom on a bail of R10,000.
Possibilities of a successful prosecution
According to Mjonondwane, the NPA takes all claims of sexual assault seriously and would act aggressively in response, but only in cases where the accusations are supported by pertinent and admissible evidence.
Mjonondwane stated, “Unfortunately, there were no prospects of a successful prosecution in this case upon further assessment of available evidence, hence the withdrawal of charges.”
